Wife, Mother of 2, and Etsy Seller - Meet Jennifer from UpperSpice!
1) How did you start creating?
The Jamaican Jerk Spice Mix is the recipe that started the discussions about going into business. In 2006, they went to Jamaica for Jennifer's wedding to a Jamaican man who had lived there until he was 10. During the visit to the island the family got a taste for the native cuisine. After returning home Trudy began her quest to create the perfect authentic Jamaican Jerk. After Jennifer's (Jamaican) mother-in-law asked for her (Dutch) mother's recipe, we knew she had it right!
2) What is your favorite thing about creating?
We love seeing and hearing all the different ways people prepare our spice mixes. Plus it's always fantastic to know that people are enjoying what you have made and believe in so much.
3) Where do you find your inspiration?
Our family. They are paramount in the taste testing, tweaking and tasting again.
4) Tell us about what you sell.
We sell spice mixes that allow the average home chef the ability to create dishes with exotic flavours. We do the blending and mixing and all our customs have to do is cook it with their favourite food and enjoy.
5) How did your shop get it's name?
Upper Spice is a play on Upper Crust. We feel that our flavours are fit for all palates, from the backyard BBQer to the upper crust.
6) Do you have any advice for other sellers?
I would say that patience is key. Nothing happens overnight and success usually entails trying a marketing approach and continually tweaking it until it takes.
7) How do you balance your Etsy shop, your children, and your everyday schedule?
Delicately. There are days where I feel guilty for balancing my four year old, four month old and laptop on my lap while having movie time. But as long as I balance the time I spend on my business with time that I have with my husband and children I feel like I've succeeded.
8) Where else can we find you?
And as a special bonus for the readers here she left us a coupon code to use!
