Feature Friday - SelkieMum & Coupon Code!

Nursing pads and covers with flair, baby dresses with vintage appeal, coffee sleeves that put the "cozy" in coffee cozy, eye masks to help with beauty sleep...there's all this and more to see at SelkieMum!
Let's Meet Jennie and find out more!

1) How did you start creating?
As a lover of Little House on the Prairie and the like, I wanted my mom to teach me sewing when I was 12 or so. I made clothes, doll clothes, costumes...and then I quit. I intended not to sew again, although I'm not sure why. Fast forward probably a decade--my sister asked me to participate in a craft fair with her. I ended up with extra stock, which eventually led to my etsy shop about six months later.

2) What is your favorite thing about creating?
I have to be honest that my main motivation is trying to help my family financially; on the other hand, I do find creating invigorating. I like to have work to do.

3) Where do you find your inspiration?
When I took up sewing again, I had a toddler and a new baby, so I started making things for babies and their mums--changing pads, nursing pads, nursing covers, cloth wipes and washcloths etc. I've always intended for baby dresses to be my signature item, inspired by my baby girl and a handful of vintage hankies. However, they take about 15 hours each to make, so I'm still trying to get my stock up with some faster items first.

4) Tell us about what you sell.
I guess I covered this above, but I make things for Mums and babies, mostly, with a few general consumer items thrown in. Coffee cozies have been a popular item for me, and they were sort of an after thought. They are cute, though.

5) How did your shop get it's name?
The Selkie is a seal person out of Celtic mythology. My online presence used to be "selkielassie"; when I had children, I started using "SelkieMum", and it had a nice ring so I used it for my shop. However, it has come to take on a deeper significance for me. See the about section of SelkieMum's Facebook page:

6) Do you have any advice for other sellers?
Don't give up. I'm a long way from "making it" and even a little ways from making a profit at all--however, if I grow as much this year as I did last year, I'll be very, very happy. It might be as much as I can keep up with. There is so, so much to learn--and learning is fun. :D Someone told me that it took them three years to really get their business going. I've held on to that when I've felt like quitting, and so far there's always been one more thing I have to try before I give up. Somewhere in there, I've made 10 times as many sales as I did last year. I remind myself of that when I get discouraged. Do remember to treat it like a job if you want it to pay like one.

7) How do you balance your Etsy shop, your children, and your everyday schedule?
Balance is a further away dream than making a living on etsy, I must admit. I get my sewing done early in the morning, late at night, during nap. My house is laid out so that I can sew in the bedroom and still see/interact with them as they play in the kitchen, so that is awesome and I can now even do some work while they are up. Nonetheless, basically when SelkieMum is going great, the house falls apart and we eat frozen pizza. When the house looks organized and we eat real food, SelkieMum is on autopilot. That's just the way it is, and I guess it is ok, but learning to juggle it all is part of the business and part of life. I still have plenty to learn.

  1. Uh-oh--my about page is blank now because I have since had that material published in MaryJane's Farm Magazine! I will try to fill it in soon, but today is a no stopping time day. :] Thanks so much for featuring SelkieMum.
